Departures and Arrivals




Veli Lehtovaara, is a choreographer and dancer based in Belgium. He works regularly in Helsinki and lives part of the year at Villa Kaunisto by the Lake Päijänne, Central-Finland. Lehtovaara studied at the Deparment of Social Sciences and Philosophy in the University of Jyväskylä (FI). In 2003 he enrolled in the BA program of Dance in Theater Academy Helsinki and in 2007 MA program of Choreography. Between 2008-2010 he studied at P.A.R.T.S. Research Cycle, Brussels.

During the years 2011-2013 Veli was artist in residency at Zodiak – Center for New Dance, Helsinki. In 2012 he initiated a long term artistic experiment Inter-local Atelier / Sundays for Everyone. In 2013 he initiated Lehtovaara & Companions, a support and production point for dance artists working between Finland and Belgium. For 2014-2016 Veli is one of Focus Artists in the project [DNA] DEPARTURES AND ARRIVALS, supported by the Creative Europe program of the European Commission.

In 2015 Veli is creating a series of solo performances in negotiation with two texts of Roland Barthes: A Lover's Discourse and The Pleasure of the Text. In this work he is collaborating with Chrysa Parkinson, Eleanor Bauer, Ville Ahonen, Mikko Hynninen, Masi Tiitta, Timo Wright and Riikka Thitz.

Parallel to his choreographic practice Veli dances with Rosas in the new creation of Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Golden Hours.
